Echoes of the Land | Amanda Tomasoa

Expressive painting inspired by Australia, featuring a stylised lizard with dot patterns, a human figure, and symbolic elements such as fire-making and a boomerang, reflecting on connection to land, culture, and understanding.

An exploration of connection to land, memory, and the quiet stories carried through culture and place.

Echoes of the Land was inspired by my seven months travelling through Australia while on the M.V. Doulos — a time that opened my eyes to the depth of connection between people, culture, and the land.

Through moments spent outdoors — gathering by fire, experiencing simple bush dancing, and learning in small ways about Aboriginal traditions — I became aware of a visual language rooted in storytelling and place. The imagery within this work reflects those impressions: the lizard, the flowing patterns, and the rhythmic use of dots, all symbolising movement, life, and connection.

This piece is not a representation of Aboriginal art itself, but a personal response to what I observed and experienced. It reflects a sense of respect, curiosity, and the lasting impact of a landscape and culture that invited me to see more deeply.
