Detour – Finding the Way Through | Amanda Tomasoa

Abstract painting with layered geometric forms and directional arrows in warm tones, inspired by road detours in Auckland and symbolising life’s unexpected changes and the search for new paths forward.

An exploration of patience, resilience, and the unexpected paths that shape our journey.

Detour – Finding the Way Through was inspired by a period in Auckland during the mid-2000s, when ongoing roadworks transformed familiar routes into spaces of delay and uncertainty. Rather than resisting the disruption, I chose to respond creatively — developing a series that embraced the concept of detours.

The arrows and recurring speed limit of 50 became symbolic reminders — encouraging patience, mindfulness, and a slower pace. What began as a response to physical roadblocks soon became a reflection of life itself, where unexpected changes can interrupt our plans and redirect our journey.

This piece invites us to trust the process of detours — to move with the flow, to pause, and to remain open to what lies beyond the next turn. Often, it is through these unplanned paths that we discover new places, new perspectives, and deeper understanding of ourselves.
